I enjoy the finer things in life, such as chicken wings and beer. I’ve created this blog to share my experiences with fellow wing lovers. My goal is to try as many different wing establishments as possible while rating each one. Feel free to leave any comments/suggestions. Enjoy!
The luck of the Irish is something that I have experienced
with wings at a few Irish pubs in the past (I'm sure you know where I mean), so the decision was made for review
number 99 to take place at an authentic Irish pub on Argyle St. to see if this
lucky streak could continue, and thankfully my luck didn't end there!
Durty Nelly's is not mistaken when they say they pay
attention to detail, the pub was designed and built in Dublin then shipped over
to it's current home. It's a fairly
large and inviting place with a reasonably priced menu.
Wings are $12/pound with no wing night, however I did notice
a pretty decent rib special on Wednesday's that I will have to go back and
try. I was hopeful that they also
provide some attention to detail in the wing department, and was very happy to
find out for myself.
Wings at Durty Nelly's!
Breading: 5/5 - The breading had a nice light crisp to it,
wasn't too thick and was bursting with flavor, this was some of the best
breading I have had in a long time!
Secret spice breading
I'm not sure if there is a secret recipe involved that calls
for 11 herbs and spices however I swear my taste buds picked up a hint of KFC
Overall Quality: 4/5 - The chicken had a nice fresh taste to
it and was fairly free of fatty pieces based on the size however I did find a
couple of broken bones and some darker meat on a couple of the wings.
@labville went with the smoked wings. They were fairly tiny compared to the regular
wings but they tasted amazing. On my
next visit I think I will see if they can do an order of half regular and half
smoked wings, the best of both worlds!
Sauce Selection: 2/5 - Your choices include Clamato Buffalo,
Whiskey BBQ, Honey Garlic or Mango Sweet and Sour, it was nice to see some
unique variations instead of just your standard wing sauces. I have been on a bit of a honey mustard kick recently and think a 'Pot of Gold' type mustardy like sauce with a bit of a kick would have been an awesome addition.
Wings are also served with Ranch to compliment/mask the
pickled vegetables that found their way on the plate (maybe this is common fare
in Ireland?). If you're a big fan of saucy
wings you may want to request additional sauce with your order as I found the
containers to be a tad on the small side, but no big deal.
Service: 4/5 - We grabbed a seat around 7:00 PM on a Tuesday
evening and the place was pretty busy, so I was expecting a bit of a wait
however we were greeted quickly and all of our food came out within ten minutes
which was pretty impressive. The orders
were all correct and drink refills were offered.
Size: 5/5 - Both the flatties and drumsticks were quite plump. It almost looked like a couple
of chicken legs were disguised as drumsticks, they were pretty impressive.
Overall Rating: 4/5
Well, I'm glad my lucky streak didn't end here. I would go back to Durty Nelly's for wings
any day. Maybe I will even be lucky
enough to find a four leaf clover hidden amongst the pickled condiments on my
