Perfection at the Pogue

I didn’t have much of a choice but to go out for wings on National Chicken Wing Day, so I went to the place that’s always been my all time favorite wing destination – the Pogue Fado.  I’m happy to say they still have the best wings around and they are $0.35/wing between 7:30 - 9:30 PM Monday to Friday.

Breading: 5/5 – Full even crispy golden coating that was not too thick and crunchy, I wish it was mandatory for wings everywhere to be breaded like this.
Perfect breading with an excellent coating of dry Cajun.
Overall quality: 5/5 – Once you get through the breading the chicken was a tasty treat, very fresh, nice and moist, not overly greasy, and there were no overly fatty or dark spots.  These are the perfect wings!

Sauce selection: 5/5 – Even though the Pineapple Curry and Frank's Gold have been retired, twenty two sauces still makes for a great selection.  My top choices are the dry Cajun on with Hot and Sweet or Southwest Chipotle on the side.
Excellent sauce selection.
Size: 5/5 – Even under the coating of breading on them, these wings had some meat.  Both the drumsticks and flatties had a healthy helping of chicken to them.
A nice thick flattie.
Service: 5/5 – This was the best service I’ve ever had at the Pogue, prompt and friendly, I hope this trend continues.

Overall rating: 5/5

I’ve reviewed the Pogue a couple of times before, but not since I've introduced the new rating system, so it’s only fair I rate them on that as well.  This is the first place with a 5/5 rating, and they truly deserve it.

Many people ask me where the best wings are, and I always say the Pogue, they’ve never let me down.  I’m going to continue the adventure of trying wings at new places, but I’m skeptical if I will ever really find a better place for wings.  If you think you know of a better place, let me know and I’d happily try them.  I may even treat you to them if you're right.

  1. Wonder if when you go there now they're like "Hey it the wingman!"

  2. when you say "My top choices are the dry Cajun on with Hot and Sweet or Southwest Chipotle on the side." do you mean dip the cajun wings in the sauce?

  3. That's correct. I get a dry Cajun spice on the wings with the sauce on the side, and then the dipping begins. Have you had the wings at the Pogue?

  6. WINGMAN! I turned 19 today, and have been waiting since I found your site last year to try Pogue wings on your recommendation. I had them tonight during their wing deal hours and was amazed that wings THAT good could be so cheap. I had the Hot and Sweat sauce as per your mentioning of it and they were literally the best wings I've ever had... In my life. Worth waiting all this time. Thanks for guiding me to such an amazing place. I believe every other wednesday will be wing night at the pogue with the co workers now.

    1. Hey Kyle,

Hope you had a great birthday, wings and beer is a perfect way to celebrate.

Thanks for the update, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed them. As you probably know, they are still my favorite. I have not found anywhere with better wings yet, and I don't know if I ever will but I'm going to keep trying.

Keep me updated if you venture to any other wing establishments, I'd be interested in hearing what you think of other wings compared to the Pogue. The Halifax Alehouse is the closest to them that I've had.

It's been a little while since I've been at the Pogue but I'm due back for a visit really soon, can't wait.

    2. I've already made plans to go back in the next couple of days, my new favorite place to eat, period. I'll let you know if I find anything else amazing, but I can't say i'll be looking anywhere else for wings for at least the next little while.

  8. Wow, love these wings! I didn't think it was possible the Pogue would have my fav wings in Hali, but it's true!

  9. My wife Crystal went here by my recommendation the other night; it was wing night there. She informed me that the wings were small, soggy and was only given a choice of 3 sauces.

  10. My son and I just tried the wings at the Pogue about an hour ago. My son couldn't finish his, and I didn't think mine were too good either. They were just above average in size, soggy / slimy, and $12.00!

    1. Wow, that's not good at all, I'm surprised to hear that. Where is your favorite spot for wings?

    2. Well, since you asked! I just went to the Lower Deck yesterday, not with my son this time, but with a co-worker, and he ordered the wings. When they arrived, they looked pretty good, so I asked the un-askable... "Can I have one?" He reluctantly agreed, and I have to say, that wing was the best wing I had in a long while. I plan to go with my son, perhaps this weekend. I'll give you a full report afterwards.

    3. Time for my report on the Lower Deck. I went again on the 12th of Sep, and I ordered the spicy flavour (I believe they only have 3 flavours). My co-worker tagged along, and he ordered the spicy Thai flavour. I have to say, the wings were just as good as the previous time I went and "borrowed" a wing from my co-worker. They're huge, crispy on the outside (even with the sauce on them), and juicy on the inside. I asked them how they do it, and the waiter said they have a few stages of preparation, including baking them after the sauce is on, which makes them crispy. I might have to make yet another trip to ensure there is consistency, but so far, they have won me over. Let me know when you get a chance to try them.

  11. Have to agree with you -- when you factor in price - selection and quality Pogue is the best spot in town in my books.
