Pass on Pepper Jack's

I ended up at Pepper Jack’s tonight to try the wings as per a recommendation from @FishermansHfx on Twitter.  I always appreciate recommendations, whether they turn out good or not so good.

I could smell the wings as soon as I walked in and I noticed a fair amount of people digging away at them, this could be a good sign.  Another good sign was the rack of paper towel on the table, the wings must be in high demand.

I also noticed a caution note in the menu – “Caution, these are not the sparrow type wings some places serve”.  Based on previous experiences and for some reason I have yet to figure out, I find the bigger the wing the lower the quality and this was no exception.

Wings are $0.50/wing on Thursday’s.  Regular price will run you $7.95/pound, $11.95/1.5 pounds or 2 pounds for $15.95.  I went with an order of 15.

Breading: 3/5 – A lighter evenly coated breading but lacked in flavor.
At first glance, these look appealing.

Overall quality: 2/5 – I really don’t understand why jumbo wings are almost always worse in quality than smaller wings.  They always look good until you take a couple of bites, then you start noticing spots and strands of dark murky gooey looking chicken.  If anyone has had the same experience or knows why this is the case, please let me know.  I also found the chicken had a freezer burnt type after taste that lingered around until the next swig of beer washed it out.  There were a few ok pieces of chicken, but overall, not that tasty.
The other picture looks more appealing.
Sauce selection: 3/5 – Your choices are mild, medium, hot, Cajun, BBQ, honey garlic, house or wacked.  I went with the Cajun on the side.  The sauce dish was a good size but didn’t have a lot of flavor for Cajun.

Service: 3/5 – The service was pretty standard and drink refills were offered.

Size: 5/5 – These were some truly jumbo wings, I just wish the flavor and quality were as big as the wings were.
Definitely not a sparrow wing.
A truly jumbo sized wing.
Total rating: 3.2/5

There were a lot of options on the menu and the prices were pretty reasonable.  I could return someday to try some of the other choices, but I won’t be ordering the wings on my next visit.

  1. I live in the are and enjoy Pepper Jack's wings. However, I may be going elsewhere because they have raised their wing night prices to $.65 per wing. Too rich for my blood.
