I enjoy the finer things in life, such as chicken wings and beer. I’ve created this blog to share my experiences with fellow wing lovers. My goal is to try as many different wing establishments as possible while rating each one. Feel free to leave any comments/suggestions. Enjoy!
As I was walking around downtown Saturday afternoon I decided it was time to try the wings at the other BBQ establishment in Halifax – the Q Smokehouse and Southern Barbeque.
I took a trip to Boneheads back in March to try the wings, and as far as I know, these are the only two places in Halifax that are a “Southern Smokehouse BBQ” type establishment, so to keep things fair I’m rating them on the same categories.
A pound of smoked wings at the Q is $9.00.
Breading: n/a – The wings weren’t breaded and I didn’t expect them to be.
Overall quality: 2/5 – The wings were kind of rubbery and a bit sticky at the same time and seemed very bland for a “smoked” wing, I was expecting a lot more flavor.
A little on the rubbery side.
I nicknamed this one "flappy"
Sauce selection: n/a – They do have five sauces to choose from – Kentucky, Memphis, Alabama, Texas and bad attitude, I went with bad attitude on the side (which was a great sauce by the way). Category is not rated because it is not a typical wing establishment.
Service: n/a – You walk up and place your order. I do want to mention that it took over 20 minutes for the food to arrive which seemed a bit excessive, however, when the food finally arrived it was accompanied by a piece of pecan pie (on the house, I didn't order it). The pie was the best part of the meal (if anyone rates pies I’d recommend checking it out).
Size: 4/5 – Fairy large wings, I just wish the flavor was as big as the wings were.
On a side note I ordered lemonade and it was delicious (the lemons were squeezed right in front of me). I also noticed they sold “Q Southern Ale”, sounded appealing so I got a glass of that, but I was a bit disappointed when I was told it is actually Garrison Tall Ship. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but if I’m going to drink Garrison Tall Ship that’s what I would expect it to be called.
It’s to bad the best part of this place was the pecan pie and the lemonade because neither one of them come from the grill as far as I know. The next time I’m craving BBQ food and don’t feel like firing up the grill at home, I don’t believe the Q will be at the top of my list.
